Summer Nature Day Camps in Grand Marais!  

Create! Explore! Discover! Garden! Investigate! Grow! Learn! Play! Build Friendships and Memories to Last a Lifetime! 

Bring your kids to discover the natural world of Michigan's Upper Peninsula in beautiful Grand Marais! Located on the shores of Lake Superior, beside Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Grand Marais is the perfect location to enjoy the outdoors. This summer, children will learn through interactive games, art projects, songs, stories, science experiments, and outdoor explorations with Nature Explorers programming. Burt Township School provides an ideal location that offers short nature walks to beaches and woodland streams.  Participants will help in school gardens, enjoy the playground, and explore the woods behind the school. Come for a week, a day, or a half-day, create your own schedule! Meet other families and provide your children with a safe and fun structured summer activity while giving yourself the chance to explore the local area.  

9am to 4pm at the Burt Township School: 

Ages: 4-11 years

July 1-3 & 5-6: Fourth of July Fun!

July 8-11: Native Michigan

July 29-August 2: Earth Science  

August 5-9: Nature Around the World

Cost:  $120 per week/$30 per day/$15 half day/Sibling rate available

*Please note: week two is only four days long and will be pro-rated accordingly.

*Pizza and Popcorn Wednesday: Cheese pizza from the Dunes Saloon available for 2.00 per slice.

*All other days, participants bring lunch and snack.

Fourth of July Fun!

Have fun with crafts, games, and nature walks while forming bonds with other children and exploring the local environment! Each day will feature a different natural theme in the following consecutive order: Plants and Seeds, Invertebrates, Fish and Sharks, Reptiles and Amphibians, Birds and Mammals. 

Native Michigan

Students will interactively discover the distinctive U.P. environment while learning about wildlife, habitats, and cultures. Experimentation will include dissecting and identifying native plants and researching insects through observation and the application of the scientific theory. Native animals will be studied through outdoor exploration, handling specimens, games, and art projects.

Earth Science 

Through hands on interaction with rocks and fossils and conducting science experiments, students will touch on several disciplines while focusing on local geology and hydrology. They will learn details of the rock and water cycles, the workings of volcanoes, the differences in clouds, and the discoveries to be made from fossils. Students will begin their own rock collections, explore local beaches, and participate in a mock dig. 

Nature Around the World

Children will actively and creatively compare and contrast the cultures and major ecosystems of each continent to our native environment. Activities will promote a comprehensive worldview of geography while also specializing each day on unique entities of individual continents. Amalia will share stories, photos, and artifacts from her work teaching environmental education to children around the world. Monday: North and South America, Tuesday: Africa, Wednesday: Europe and Asia, Thursday: Australia and Antarctica

The Instructor:  Amalia Fernand, M.S.

Amalia has a Master of Science in Ecological Leadership and Education and has implemented successful day camps with children on nearly every continent.  With a background in Montessori, experiential, and environmental education, Amalia has created a unique hands-on based curriculum.  The last five summers were spent directing a summer nature camp in Traverse City, Michigan, and before that, in Saint Petersburg, Florida.  During recent winters Amalia packed up art supplies, magnifying glasses and binoculars to bring Nature Explorers programming to various developing nations.  Children in the following countries participated in the same activities as Grand Marais kids will this summer:  Madagascar, Ethiopia, Uganda, Thailand, Colombia, Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica.  Around the world, the Nature Explorers mission remains the same:  "to help children foster a deeper understanding of their environment, an excitement for learning and exploration, and a deep set love of nature that lasts a lifetime."
